The drive arrived yesterday and is working with its internal
termination on. It`s only mounted as a CD at the moment as I have not
got any cutting software except the pc stuff that came with it.
The manual says that it supports DAO, TAO, SAO and packet writting.
Does any of the cd burning software on the amiga support all (or most)
of these. I was going to try this drive with the make CD demo that was
on AF a while ago as it supports the 4416 does any body see any
problems with this ?
Thank you for your help

Subject: [afb] DCE producing PPCs and BVisions?
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

In AF134 the Eyetech advert claims that DCE are producing
some BlizzardVision graphics cards under license from
phase5. While I don't really know if this has actually
happened, I had to check out DCE's website.
On the DCE website (http://www.dcecom.de/) they also
advertise Blizzard PPCs, Cyberstorm PPCs as well as 68k
accelerators and other interesting stuff including a
hardware MPEG audio decoder that I've never heard of.
Maybe this stuff (the PPC and gfx cards I mean) has never
actually been manufactured and has just been 'advertised'
on the site for a while, but the website is dated 2000.
Are DCE actually going to make these PPC cards?
If not, why not, considering the supposedly huge number of
back orders for the phase5 PPC cards? If they can do the
Blizzard 68k range then why not PPC?

MakeCD, BurnIT, MasterISO. Demos of all of these programs have been on
previous CDs; just use AFCDfind to get 'em.

Yes, they are. I spoke to Tony at Power the other day and he reckons that
within a couple of weeks they will have:
BVisionPPC
CVisionPPC
CStorm III
CStorm PPC
BlizzardPPC (233MHz 603e with SCSI)
Both CStorms and BPPC will be available with either 040 or 060.
All the best,

How about a joint "getting the most from pcx/fusion/af135 freebie" ? ;)
Has there been a photogenics tutorial? Cos I've just bought that. Or
how's about a series on setting up OS3.5 for optimum use, followed by
patches and things ??
How long do features have to be? How's about a couple of one-offs like
"getting the most from xyz" where xyz is turboprint or whatever ... ?
Just bouncing a couple of ideas off the walls ...

Okay. the tutorial ideas I want are for "long-term" tutorials, six chapters
or so.

There hasn't been a photogenics tutorial, but Paul Nolan and I have been
discussing him writing one for us.
A "getting the most from Workbench" kind of thing is also on my list of
possibles, but what would you guys (my very own focus group) want from it?

Why are you entering your reply inside quotes? Very confusing! Anyway, I'd
rather do something other than programming since very few people seem to do

Some sort of internet not-for-getting-connected-but-server-y-type thing?
Like setup/using/maintaining a web site using apache (sorry, first
thing that came to mind). Similarly, FTP, IRC server, etc. And you
could work in that other suggestion of internet security that someone
mentioned a couple of days ago. You can always check your stuff without
needing to be online by using the loopback address.
Or would that be too much work/complexity/not big enough audience*

Helpful? Your tone of writting comes across to me as aggressive.
It was on Excite, webcrawler, hotbot and several others. (I couldn't
get Yahoo to put AYP on there despite repeated requests)
BTW, I started Amiga Yellow Pages towards the end of July '98. By the
time it had gone "off the air" a fortnight ago, It was just under the
30,000 mark. Not brilliant, but certainly not bad either.
Someone somewhere must have heard of it.
Besides, I have had a stack of emails from people telling me how much
they valued the service and how they miss it.
I didn't do too badly surely? It was mentioned in AF and CU Amiga too.
:P

Free beer? Oh it's not that sort of request. It'd need to cover the
basics about installing it all, and then the boing bag (btw any news on BB2
yet?), and covering problems that might arise from it such as the rogue
C:Installer problem. Then there's setting up patches with it such as
TweakWB and the like. Then of course there's getting the FastIPrefs
version of WBPattern to lock the palette for MWB ....
Hope this is a good start ...

I'd like a "getting the most out of OS3.5" type thing. Maybe you could
print a list of programs which have been specifically designed for it,
and also ones which have problems (advice on how to fix).
I know DOpus keeps being done, but I can't get enough of it! More DOpus!
Photogenics would be pretty good too.

It might have to be a general GTMOO Workbench, rather than just OS3.5, since
the more interesting things will apply to all current versions...

Yeah, but I've already written one six-part DOpus tutorial, a complete
beginners guide and most of the tutorials on the DOplus CD as well. I'm
pretty much Opus'ed out...

Bizarrely, what is probably the best flapjack on the planet is sold in the
Cambridge University chemistry department for around 50 pence a piece.
This information is almost certainly entirely useless to you.
(couldn't you have got something a little more substantial than one of
their salad things? M&S's new range of sandwiches is pretty good. Erm.

Ta for the exclusive news - is that gonna make the news pages of the issue
just finished and the CD of the next one? :-)

Hmmm, using MCP (without patches) and there's nothing to do that. And why
should people following this tutorial have to install MCP just so that they
can have something that's part of teh OS anyway? All you have to do is
change the required setting in the WBPattern prefs - the only problem is,
the WBPattern prefs editor doesn't allow you to do it! D'oh! Hence having
to use the FastIPrefs one ... unless this is fixed in BB2 ...

CD32 Cannon Fodder won't work on an Amiga, as it accesses CD32
hardware. You need to get the HDInstall patch from an AFCD/Aminet.
Well, I say 'patch', but it's the actual Amiga version of the CF main
program.

A tutorial for the new version of ImageFX might be better, seeing as
that's just come out. There hasn't been an IFX tutorial since the CU

Originally, it was Emap, but the new 'improved' version was by

Amiga Sandwich: Comes wrapped in lavish packaging showing
mouthwatering snack. Revealed to be two slices of white bread with no
filling, and only a tiny bit of margarine.

Hi there,
This is a desperate plea for information. If *anyone* has programmed
*anything* using realtime.library then I would appreciate some help as I'm
going round in circles with my project and I don't have very long before it
has to be handed in.
My problem in a nutshell is that I can't get 2 or more players using the
same conductor to work together. Either one works or the other, never
both. I won't go into too much detail as it's irrelevant to some of the
lists I'm sending this to, but if you have any experience then please let
me know and I'll fill in the gaps.
Cheers,
Tom

Following on from the above, how about a "how to setup and use the
Amiga port of Apache on your Amiga" type thing? You could also include
all of the files required on AFCD.
With the imminent (ever hopeful) release of cable modems, people could
serve their own web pages from their own machines[1]. The security
feature could also be tied in with this.
[1] I I know /outgoing/ speed may not be /that/ fast, but it should
still cope fairly well as long as the site isn't too popular...

Yep, infact i started barfly disasembling but i think it crashed,
(after 2 hours !), it allready spewed out 14mb+ of fairly scary looking
asm. All you need to do now is to go through nearly every line an
change it to ppc opcodes.

Odd; it's well documented that it won't work on Amigas without the
patch. Perhaps, if you have a relatively new copy of the CD it has
already been patched (e.g. by Epic etc)

You should be able to go for a higher speed without probs anyway, but
setting your serial port to 230,400 will certainly work and might even
improve performance...

Slightly late on the thread, but what about a tutorial on geekgadgets
?, perhaps with the latest current/alpha versions of the software on
the CD.
I know its a massive topic, but you could do gcc&egcs / sed&grep /
jove&emacs / awk&tcl / ksh&scripts etc,.. in each tutorial, starting
with the install and going through to decent usage of the progs.
Its a topic most people will have to cover at some point and it has the
added charm that it makes Mac (and MacOSX) users really scared.

You can go up to 234000 (or whatever it is :) without problems, but
there's not really any noticeable speed difference. Any higher will
cause problems though.

Why not do an 'Amiga in the Real World' set of tutorials where you can
explore some practical applications (suggested by afb members?) of an
Amiga setup? With the exception of setting up web sites - a well worn
subject - you could look at:
o Designing a newsletter -
A perfect vehicle for stretching the legs of Pagestream
o Recording sports results -
Using spreadsheets to maintain a league table.
o House/garden design -
All the rage on telly and PC CD-ROMs, show how to use Imagine or
similar to pre-plan one of those DIY jobs.
o Run a radio station -
I have no idea how to do this. Maybe you could use ARexx to control a
playlist and some juke-box-alike equipment for the multitude of CDs.
etc...
I'm sure there are better ideas out there than these. You could have
boxouts detailing availability of hw/sw or getting to know the
software. Who knows, you could learn something yourself :-)

Is this Mac Netscape? I use Netscape Comm. 4.7 for Windows (95) and
have used 4.6 and as long as I actually include BORDER="0", I find there
is no gap, as is the case with every other browser I can get my hands

Hang on Mash - are you talking out of your arse?
Adam's comment was:
"Why don't you put full commercial games on next months CD , games from
1988-1993/4 in DMS files"
Can you point me towards all these games which are free and legal that were
released during these years? And also show me which companies (such as
Gremlin, etc) who have *legally* allowed this to happen.
Having a broken leg means I cannot put my foot in my mouth - as opposed to
you.

I have got one of those on my system without the reset fix and it works
perfectly even after reboots. Its a revision 2B your interested.
If you want to do the fix without soldering you could try getting
clips that
hook on to the chips legs maplins have some in there catalouge. I was
looking
into these but since it worked ok I didn`t bother.

READ AMIGA FORMAT AND/OR AMIGACTIVE
For God's sake - for someone so opinionated, you don't take much notice of
what you read (if you do). I even started a thread about this a couple of
months ago, asking for details from people that had been to the Koln show.
> > yes...but it depends on how cheap you define cheapo ;-)

Well you are stuffed there then. You need a Zorro capable box for the
100Mbps card - the 16bit PCMCIA on the miggy cannot do it, so they cvame up
with a Zorro PCMCIA adapter instead. Tough luck :)

I don't think so. For a start trying to use any kind of Unix is far too much
like programming for quite a lot of readers, but also because it'll be
interminably dull for people who aren't interested. At least atm, if you
don't program, even the programming tutes are relatively interesting -
thinking of Rich's Programming Perfection and Simon's Banging the Metal in

Or even running them head to head could be interesting - although they are
aimed at different markets, they do have a lot of similar functionality (but
IFX is buried under a hideous interface - pity - still trying to get the
hang of it)

OK dump that idea then - didn't think anyone would go for it anyway.
What about:
JST and WHDload tutorials - how to load your fav games onto HDD and how to
create installers/patchers - might encourage some people to register it.

Possibly, just depends how much attention you pay to what's on the

>I do only run my website, why would I run someone else's?
My point is, if you haven't run a site where getting a good position in
a search engine can be important, you won't know the difficulties
involved in getting a good position, e.g., within the first 50 sites
returned from a search.
Obviously Michael has run into this (as he's already mentioned), as have
I, seeing as I currently run 7 web sites....

The thing is, I wouldn't mind if it was a decent machine, but it's a P75
with 32Mb RAM! Despite it being such an old machine & monitor, they've
given me a brand new HP Deskjet 710C to go with it, and a seemingly new

And according to the Koln report (if my memory serves me correctly),
connecting to a Zorro II interface means that it'll only be able to
reach about 12mbits.

Just a thought OS3.5 & MCP = :-(
When using OS3.5 & MCP together it has been reported that starting any of
the
following software can cause the machine to crash:-
YAM 2 - Wordsworth 6or7 - DOpus 5.11 - ABackup 5.20
I have also had problems with OS3.5,using YAM 2 & Voyager 3.When both are
running and
i try to save a fastlink the machine crashes. When i turn YAM 2 off and save
theres
no problem,it may be just my machine but the OS 3.5 & MCP problem has been
reported by
lots of users!.

Well people running Opus 5.11 should get a life anyway. That version was
never very good and later ones are available (and more OS3.5 compatible).
However, I run YAM on a 24-hour basis both here and at home with no
trouble. It hasn't been the cause of any of the few crashes I experience. I
can't comment on Wordworth (which has never been programmed in a
particularly OS-friendly manner anyway) or ABackup.

Again, I run V3 almost constantly on this machine too, and while it's not as
stable as I'd like, I don't see the connection between it and YAM. I think
you'd probably find the same problem with running any two MUI programs, and
that there's a problem with MUI for you, rather than these individual apps.

Not if you're not using it. That might sound fatuous, but it won't degrade
the performance of your machine at all by simply being plugged in. However,
because of the fact that it (and indeed any Zorro II busboard) can't handle
DMA, then any card plugged into it *will* have to use the processor,
thereby slowing your machine down. However, the trade off is well worth
while in most instances I would imagine.

Many modems only work up to 115200. Try it and see, the worst that can
happen is that it won't work.
Watch the transfer rates if it does connect, faster is sometimes slower
where serial speeds are concerned.

How about putting old AF Covers issues 1-50 on the CD in .jpg files?

Fusion can be fooled to use SS hardfiles: make a Fusion hardfile and
save it to be used by Fusion. Then delete it and rename the SS hardfile
to the same - the Fusion deleted hardfile must be at least as big as the
SS one. Then boot Fusion - and the hardfile should be there (at least
for me it worked).

Does it mean that ALL these A500 owners are school kids or students with no
money. Well 35 isn`t *too expensive* at all for a ROM and WB 3.1 upgrade.
Windows 98 is at least twice as expensive. This is the 21st century NOT
1990.
Tell them to start saving. A quid or more a week and then spend it on 3.1!
Internet access could be conceivably be accessible from any computer! As
long
as its got a TCPIP and PPP access you can access the net. Web browsing may
be difficult but email, ftp and ircing doesn`t need much CPU power. Even
A500s
can use ALynx to use the web (minus the gfx). I read that an an ancient
TI-99/4a
managed to browse the web as well! So, for a A500 it ain`t impossible (a bit
slow).

This is a known bug when PrinterGfx is set to Colour mode and thus picks
the first colour from RGB ie Red. To print in Black, load PrinterGfx and set
it to black and white. It should now print in Black!

Are you using Crossdos from WB 3? If so, then it will not work
on hard disks, as it was limited to using 1.44 floppies at most.
You need the full version of Crossdos such as Crossdos 7
to access Zips, Hard disks etc.

Yes ,PCs do not use RDBs at all. They use FAT and MBRs.

You need a full version of CrossDOS (the one on Workbench only works
with floppies) and a Mountlist to so that Workbench can mount it. Try
MountDOS on Aminet to create it for you!

That might be a better bet than using mountlists etc.

I found setting up net software just as easy on the PC as on the Amiga
and I can use either system very well.

I agree there. The cost is far too much and there isn`t much software around
to
make the _full_ use of it! And you are trying to fit them in every nook and
crany
you can find and then discovering that some things won`t work with one
another
or you need another patch or another upgrade to fix it... :(
>But you're left with a nicer system, imho. I would rather use my 030

I find AGA far too slow and Chip RAM to be a big bottleneck on Amigas.
How many people use AGA 256 colour Workbenchs! Not many, slugs on
a bad day, run faster than that!
The BoXeR could have made a killing last Christmas, if it had been released
when they
said it should. At least it doesn`t have any of the restrictions the current
A1200s and
A4000s have and come with full Zorro 3 and unlimited chip ram, faster
chipset and
can be fitted in _cheap_ ATX type boxes than the overpriced Towers we have
to buy
nowadays!

The only update has been the Blitz Support Suite but that is also hard to
get hold
off as well.
As for OS 3.5, the majority of your software should work. The only thing to
watch
out for is third party patches such as MCP and some Icon programs that do
not
like the new ColourIcon system introduced in OS3.5. Some new updates are
available
that fix them. See Aminet.
